Mamquam Road Sewer project delayed to 2022

Work on the Highway 99 section of the Mamquam Road sewer upgrade project will be delayed until 2022 due to a combination of inclement weather and length of time required in order to plan and execute a project of this scale. Unsuccessful drilling attempts under Highway 99 forced the unexpected delay which now requires open-trench excavation across the highway. Mamquam Road between Government Rd and Highway 99 is expected to reopen by the end of October, and will close again when the project resumes in 2022.  

“This was a unique and rare situation for the Engineering staff at the District of Squamish to navigate, and one that has required us to quickly pivot and plan for alternative solutions while considering cost, risk and impact to neighbouring residents and the broader community,” says District of Squamish Capital Projects Manager Jesse Morwood. “We understand this is not the outcome any of us had anticipated nor hoped for, and we thank residents for their patience while we work diligently to reassess our new direction and timeline in order to see this project through to completion.”

Re-opening Highlights:

• Mamquam East / Highway 99 Intersection lane closures (and Southbound Highway 99 left turn) are anticipated to re-open Tuesday, October 19, weather permitting;
• Mamquam West / Highway 99 lane closures (and Northbound Highway 99 left turn) are anticipated to re-open at the end of the October following a new Fortis gas line installation;
• Road paving work will be completed with additional paving anticipated to continue in 2022; 
• Active Transportation Project construction along Mamquam West is ongoing and will be completed in 2022.
• The Highway 99 crossing and remaining eastern section to Glenalder Place will be completed in 2022. 

Mamquam Sewer Project at a glance: 

• Identified as a priority in the District’s Sanitary Sewer Master Plan, the work involves the installation of 300 metres of sewer upgrades.
• Upgrades will result in a new sewer line to accommodate new growth, new sidewalk and bike paths, and road repaving, each of which are intended to make significant improvements to the area. 
• Phase 1 work along Mamquam Road began in June 2021.
• The project area spans from Willow Crescent (west) to Glenalder Place on the east side of Highway 99.
